Governing Council Member Elections 2017

PacIOOS is pleased to welcome the newest regional members on the Governing Council, Dr. Carlos Villacis, Director of Applied Science at the Pacific Disaster Center, and Tom Smith, Senior Coastal Engineer at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Elections were also held to fill four open Hawaiʻi seats on the PacIOOS Governing Council. Aloha and welcome to our newest members, Mark Fox, The Nature Conservancy’s Hawaiʻi Program; Doug Harper, Mālama Maunalua; Justine Nihipali, Office of Planning, Coastal Zone Management Program; and Davis Yogi, Department of Transportation Harbors Division.

Elected by other Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signatories, the incoming members will serve for three-year terms. The Governing Council is comprised of five regional members, six Hawaiʻi members, and one member each from Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Republic of Palau, as well as one ex-officio member from the fiscal sponsor organization.

PacIOOS is the first regional association that was certified as a Regional Information Coordination Entity (RICE) by the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). Certification provides NOAA and its interagency partners a means to verify that a regional association’s organizational and operational practices, including data management, meet recognized and established standards set by NOAA.
