False Killer Whale Sightings

Cascadia Research Collective (CRC) has been undertaking surveys for odontocetes in Hawaiian waters since 2000. False killer whales have the lowest abundance estimate of any odontocetes in Hawaiian waters. Two populations have been recognized. The main Hawaiian Islands insular population, estimated at about 150 individuals, was listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 2012. Survey CRC1 represents shipborne sightings while survey CRC2 shows positions identified via satellite tags.

Dr. Joseph Mobley of the Marine Mammal Research Consultants (MMRC) led aerial surveys for cetaceans in Hawaiian waters from 1993-2003.
