Tsunami Evacuation Zones

If you are in a low-lying area near the coast or in the tsunami evacuation zone during a significant earthquake, get to higher ground outside of the evacuation zone immediately. A locally-generated tsunami could reach the shore within minutes, even before a warning can be issued. The Hawaiian Islands are also vulnerable to Pacific-wide tsunamis: these tsunamis result from distant earthquakes or landslides in places like Chile, Alaska, and Japan and can arrive in Hawaiian waters within hours.

For most Tsunami Warnings, evacuate out of the tsunami evacuation zones; in the unlikely case of an "Extreme Tsunami" Warning, evacuate out of both the tsunami evacuation zones and the extreme tsunami evacuation zones. The extreme boundaries have been modeled but not observed historically and are for planning purposes. NOTE: Extreme tsunami zones for Hawaiʻi Island are in development but not yet completed.
