Tsunami Wave Heights: 1964

On March 29, 1964 a tsunami was generated by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, the largest earthquake ever recorded in North America. Fortunately, due to the orientation of the generating fault, wave heights reaching Hawaiʻi were smaller and caused little damage compared to the Aleutian tsunamis of 1946 and 1957. Maximum wave heights reached 12.5 feet at Hilo, Hawaiʻi (Big Island).
