For a mobile-friendly version of Voyager, visit: http://pacioos.org/voyager/mobile/. Voyager Mobile has been optimized for touch screen devices and small screen sizes.

While not all of Voyager's overlays and features are available in the mobile version, this simplified interface highlights the components most critical for on-the-go monitoring.

Quick Tips:

  1. iPhone and iPad Web Clip
  2. download the app
  3. navigating Voyager Mobile
  4. options and info buttons

iPhone and iPad Web Clip

Pointing your mobile device's internet browser to http://pacioos.org/voyager/mobile/ is all that is needed to operate Voyager Mobile. However, Apple iOS devices like iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch have an added feature that allows you to bookmark the web page onto your device's home screen with an App icon. This is called a "Web Clip". Not only does this make it easier to find Voyager Mobile for repeated use, it also has the added benefit of running the site in full-screen without the unnecssary address and navigation bars visible at the top and bottom of the Safari browser. This gives you more room to view the maps and data you are interested in.

To save a Voyager Mobile Web Clip to your mobile device home screen:

  1. Open Safari on your Apple mobile device.
  2. Go to http://pacioos.org/voyager/mobile/.
  3. Tap the Action Box (the square with the arrow coming out of it). This is located at the bottom center of the web browser window in iPhone and iPod, while on iPad it is located at the top left beside the URL address box.

    iOS 7:pre-iOS 7:
  4. Tap the Add to Home Screen button.
  5. Edit the name of the clip and then tap Add. "PacIOOS Voyager" is too long a name on iPhone and iPod Touch, so you may want to shorten this to "PacIOOS" or "Voyager".
  6. Exit Safari and go to your home screen. You should now see a new Web Clip with the Voyager Mobile icon and can use this as a shortcut to a full-screen version of the site.

download the app

In addition to access through a web browser, Voyager Mobile is available as a free app for Apple iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch). Internet access will still be required to run the app. Visit the iTunes App Store here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pacioos-voyager/id722492612?ls=1&mt=8. Or scan the QR Code below:

navigating Voyager Mobile

  1. After the site finishes initializing, the following home screen appears. Click Enter Site.

  2. A list of PacIOOS-supported regions appears on the next screen. Click on a region or select a specific island from the region's options list.

  3. You are next presented with the list of maps available for display in your selected region of interest. Note that you can return to the region selection screen anytime by clicking on the region or island name at the top of the screen. You can also return to the home screen by clicking on the home icon. Each map listed also has an options list where you can choose between different sources for the same variable, such as observations (buoys, sensors, and other instruments), model forecasts, and satellite data.

  4. Once you have selected a map, it will begin loading on the next page. After it has finished loading, you can return to the map selection screen anytime by clicking the white and blue LAYERS button in the upper-left of the map.

  5. Many of the maps are clickable and will produce a pop-up at the clicked location with further information, measurements, time series plots, and/or download options. Some maps also let you choose between different days (by clicking on the calendar icon), times (by clicking on the clock icon), time zones, or depth levels.

  6. Voyager Mobile will respond to changes in viewport orientation between portrait and lanscape modes. While the above examples are all shown in portrait orientation, here is an example of tilting the device on its side.

  7. To better help orient people geographically, Voyager Mobile displays the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) for each PacIOOS region in light blue. The EEZ stretches out to 200 nautical miles from a region's coastlines and defines the zone wherein a state has special rights over the exploration and use of marine resources under international law of the sea. In addition, the equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, antimerian, and prime meridian are shown as dashed yellow lines.

options and info buttons

  1. The region selection screen includes an options pull-down menu to the left of each region button as well as an info button to its right.

  2. Clicking a region's options button provides a list of islands to focus on. The list of map layers on the next screen will only include layers relevant to the selected island and the resulting maps will zoom to that island. Alternatively, clicking on the main region button will display maps for the entire region.

  3. Clicking a region's info button provides further information about that region.

  4. Similarly, the map selection screen includes an options pull-down menu to the left of each map type as well as an info button to its right.

  5. Clicking a map's options button provides a list of available data sources, such as observations (buoys, sensors, and other instruments), model forecasts, and satellite data. The one labeled "default" would be selected automatically if you clicked on the main map button rather than selecting from the options menu.

  6. Clicking a map's info button provides further information about that map, including links to each of the available data sources.
