Tracks some ship locations for the waters surrounding the State of Hawaiʻi. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an internationally-recognized shipboard broadcast system that communicates information to shore-based stations and other AIS-equipped ships. The U.S. Coast Guard has developed rules applicable to both U.S. and foreign vessels that require owners and operators of most commercial vessels to install and use the AIS to increase the security and safety of maritime transportation. The Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS) operates an AIS receiver off the coast of Kalaeloa (Barbers Point), Oʻahu. Other data sources for this overlay are provided by MarineTraffic.com.
