PacIOOS/PMEL Water Quality Buoys

The PacIOOS water quality buoys are equipped to measure temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, and optical backscatter (turbidity or cloudiness). The dissolved oxygen measurements reveal important information about the balance of photosynthesis and respiration. Some sites additionally measure nitrate concentrationis and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Continuous sampling of these outflow areas provides a record of baseline conditions of the chemical and biological environment for comparison when there are pollution events such as storm runoff or a sewage spill.

time period: current; updates every 20 or 60 minutes depending on the site.
