The PacIOOS wave buoy off West Babeldaob (CDIP #283; NDBC #XXXXX) measures air temperature at approximately 9 miles (8 nmi or 15 km) offshore of Aiyasu barrier reef between the states of Ngardmau and Ngeremlengui along the north-central west coast of the island of Babeldaob in the Republic of Palau. Data are transmitted every 5 minutes. This Datawell Directional Waverider DRW4 buoy uses a compact air temperature (CAT4) sensor attached to the antenna at approximately 2 meters above the ocean surface.

This buoy was purchased with support from the “Enhancing Climate Information and Knowledge Services for resilience in 5 island countries of the Pacific Ocean”, referred to as UNEP CIS-Pac5, a USD $49.9 million program, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). CIS-Pac5 seeks to establish integrated climate and ocean information systems and multi-hazard early warning systems in Cook Islands, Niue, Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI), and Tuvalu. The views expressed in this information product are those of the author(s) and the GCF cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein.
The buoy is maintained through a collaboration with the Palau National Weather Service Office (WSO Palau) and PacIOOS (with additional funding support from U.S. IOOS) with additional local support from the Palau National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) and the Coral Reef Research Foundation (CRRF). Data are managed by the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Long-term partnerships between PacIOOS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and CDIP enable data streaming into the PacIOOS website and PacIOOS Voyager.
