Abstract:
Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) regional wave model 14-day hourly forecast for the Republic of Palau. The computation utilizes spatial resolution ranging from 3,000 m in the open ocean to 50 m at the shore, with model results interpolated to a 275-m grid for display and archive. This high-resolution model captures key coastal wave processes such as refraction, shoaling, breaking, and shadowing to provide a general indication of the nearshore environment. Boundary conditions are derived from global and regional WaveWatch III models operated by PacIOOS. Global wind forcing and polar ice coverage are provided by NOAA's Global Forecast System (GFS), while astronomical tide levels are defined using the Oregon State University Tidal Prediction Software (OTPS) to modulate wave transmission into reef lagoons. While considerable effort has been made to implement all model components in a thorough, correct, and accurate manner, various sources of uncertainty and error remain. As such, please use these data with the appropriate caution, especially for activities involving ocean safety or decision-making.

PacIOOS provides timely, reliable, and accurate ocean information to support a safe, clean, productive ocean and resilient coastal zone in the U.S. Pacific Islands region.

The Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS) is funded through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a Regional Association within the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). PacIOOS is coordinated by the University of Hawaii School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). This forecast has been developed with support from the "Enhancing Climate Information and Knowledge Services for resilience in 5 island countries of the Pacific Ocean", referred to as UNEP CIS-Pac5, a USD 49.9 million program, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). CIS-Pac5 seeks to establish integrated climate and ocean information systems and multi-hazard early warning systems in Cook Islands, Niue, Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI), and Tuvalu. The views expressed in this information product are those of the author(s) and the GCF cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein. The forecast has been developed in collaboration with PacIOOS partners in the Republic of Palau.
