PacIOOS’ Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model is a 5-day, hourly forecast for the region surrounding the Manu’a Islands (Ofu, Olosega, and Taʻu) in American Samoa at approximately 275-m resolution. The forecast is run daily and gets updated on this website around 1:00 AM Samoa Standard Time (UTC-11) every morning. This high-resolution wave model helps capture shallow water effects and nearshore coastal dynamics such as refracting, shoaling, and shadowing. SWAN (http://swanmodel.sourceforge.net) is an open source wave model developed at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Model runs are configured and produced for the Tutuila region by Dr. Kwok Fai Cheung and lab within the Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering (ORE) in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Boundary conditions are provided by the wider WaveWatch III model for the region surrounding Samoa (ww3_samoa) at approximately 5-km resolution.
